Dave and Maria Barkley were the co-founders of Solana Beach Volleyball Club in 1996. They started with one team and have grown to 15 teams over the past 13 years. In February of 2003 Dave passed away after a 15 month battle with a malignant brain tumor. The same perseverance and commitment that he demonstrated in his many years of coaching and teaching was lived out to his last day. The legacy of his coaching and the heart of the program continue with Maria as club director along with Diane Pascua as coaching director.
From a professional standpoint, Maria graduated from USC with a BS in Occupational Therapy. She practiced as a pediatric occupational therapist for 13 years working with disabled children and their families. Working as the director of SBVC has allowed her to continue her passion of working with kids and their families to bring about and facilitate health in all aspects of life. Her desire is that SBVC would be a program that strives to develop first and foremost the player’s technical volleyball skills, but also encourages the growth of the whole person including the athlete’s moral character, identity and life skills. These may sound like lofty goals for a mere volleyball program however; this truly is the heart and desire of SBVC.
