Letter from SBVC Director, Maria Barkley
24 August 2012
Dear SBVC Families,
It is with a mix of emotions that I write this letter. The feelings range from bittersweet, resolution, contentment and excitement all rolled together!
The “bittersweet” part comes with the announcement that SBVC will not be fielding any teams this upcoming season. We plan to still exist as an entity, but will take on a new face with a different focus. Those plans are still evolving, and more information will be available as the vision becomes clearer. During the last week of our 2012 season, Hot Shotz Sports Center gave SBVC notice that they would be shutting down their business and not be returning to the Fairgrounds next season. This was certainly unexpected. Since that time, we explored many different options to enable us to continue operating at the same capacity but ultimately none were truly viable in terms of the physical space, location and/or finances.
It has been difficult to reach a point of sound “resolution” during this process as I acutely understand that the outcome of this decision will impact many. In working through this process however, I do feel confident that we exhausted all of our options and that this is the best choice given the circumstances.
The feeling of “contentment” enters in as I know that SBVC has been a unique and valuable entity in the volleyball community. Having completed our 15th year as a club this last season, I am proud of what we created and of the players and coaches that have been a part of our program over the years. Knowing we have positively impacted the lives of so many families and players over the years is very satisfying and humbling at the same time. We grew and learned a lot along the way, but it is my hope that we will be remembered as an organization that truly cared about and invested in the lives of the young women and families we had the privilege of working with. I know for certain that Dave Barkley (late founder of SBVC) would be very proud of all we accomplished and all the lives we impacted.
The “excitement” is founded in looking forward towards the future and my continued involvement in the great world of volleyball. In looking at many different options, I have personally made the decision to become involved with Genuine Volleyball Club in Carlsbad. This will be their 3rd season as a club and I see many of the same values and principles in their organization that SBVC was founded upon. They are in the process of expanding from 7 teams to potentially up to 12 teams and will have the capacity to welcome new families! Genuine would like to extend an invitation to any SBVC families to attend their tryouts this fall and see if they might be a good fit for your daughter as well. There are many great clubs in the San Diego area and we are fortunate to have so many options! Genuine feels like the right fit for me and for my younger daughter Mikayla to continue in.
So in closing, I wanted to offer sincere thanks for allowing me the privilege of providing an opportunity for young women athletes to grow and develop in the sport of volleyball. I hope they learned a bit about life, friendships, responsibility, character, integrity and sacrifice (just to name a few!) along the way. I also hope they had a lot of fun in the process and will carry great memories of their time with SBVC! I will also greatly miss many of the wonderful parents that I have gotten to know over the years. Finally, I wanted to acknowledge all the coaches who have been a part of SBVC over the years! We could not have accomplished all that we did without the coaches who bought into the vision and goals of SBVC. I sincerely wish you all the best and very much look forward to seeing you all out in the community!
If you have any personal stories or thoughts as to how SBVC or an SBVC coach impacted your life, I would really appreciate it if you to take a moment and send it to me. I would love to be able to keep some of those thoughts as memories!
With Much Appreciation,
Maria Barkley
